HOW TO CLEAN CVT FOR MOTORCYCLE?

If you ride an automatic scooter or motorcycle with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) regular cleaning is important to keep your bike running smoothly. Dust, belt residue, and dirt can build up inside the CVT housing over time, causing poor acceleration, unusual noises, or reduced performance.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to clean your motorcycle CVT safely and properly.

Tools You Will Need:

  • Socket wrench set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Clean rag or microfiber cloth
  • Soft brush
  • Cvt cleaner
  • Torque wrench (recommended)

Step 1: Remove the CVT Cover

Locate the CVT cover on the left side of most scooters. Use the correct socket wrench to remove all bolts carefully. Keep the bolts in order so reinstalling is easier later.

Step 2: Inspect the Inside

Once the cover is removed, check the following parts:

  • Drive belt
  • Roller weights
  • Clutch assembly
  • Pulley faces

Look for cracks, heavy dust, or oil leak. Use a soft brush and compressed air to remove dust buildup inside the housing.

Step 3: Clean the Variator and Clutch Area

Spray a small amount of CVT cleaner onto a rag (not directly on rubber parts). Wipe the pulley faces and metal surfaces. Do not spray cleaner on Belt, Rubber seal, Bearings directly

Step 4: Check the Belt Condition

Inspect the belt for:

  • Cracks
  • Thin width
  • Uneven wear
  • If damaged, replace it instead of cleaning it.

Step 5: Reassemble Everything

  • Once clean and dry
  • Greas the brearings
  • Reinstall the CVT cover
  • Tighten bolts evenly
  • Use proper torque specs if available
  • Make sure no tools are left inside,

And then when it’s over start the engine and listen for unusual sounds. Take a short test ride to check smooth acceleration, no rattling noise, better throttle response.

Tips:

  • Never use grease inside dry belt surfaces
  • Replace rollers if flat-spotted
  • Use genuine or quality parts
  • Clean cooling vents regularly

So when did we do the CVT cleaning?

General recommendation:

Every 5,000–8,000 km for daily use, More often in dusty or wet areas, During every belt replacement service

Cleaning your motorcycle CVT is one of the best ways to maintain smooth performance and extend transmission life. With basic tools and careful handling, you can do it at home and save money on service costs.

A clean CVT means smoother rides, better acceleration, and longer-lasting parts.
